Department of Economics
PRELUDE -
Long journey of our college started in 1946 when the ‘King’ of Mahishadal, Kumar Deba Prasad Garga Bahadur founded it with the support of his subjects and then British rulers. The Discipline of Economics was introduced as a General Course (Pass Course) subject in 1948 for the undergraduate (B.A. General) students. At that time the Department of Economics was formed and it attracted a good number of students. In 1981, Commerce was introduced in the College as an undergraduate discipline (B.Com Honours & B. Com General) and the Economics portion of that subject was assigned to the teachers of Economics Department for teaching. Further, in 1998, the College was allowed to give teaching in Economics Honours (B. Sc. / B.A. 3 year Degree) as a millennium gift. Even if the number of students studying Economics Honours is not so significant in recent years, we are hopeful that with the changing nature of the job market and needs of the modern day world it will increase shortly.
Additionally, we are also involved in giving classes to the undergraduate students of vocational degree courses (B. Voc.) of different streams like Automobile Servicing and Maintenance, Hospitality Management and Retail Management over last few years, which are offered by the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Kaushal Kendra (DDUKK) and approved by the statutory bodies.
The Department of Economics has started its journey towards progress in 1948 with 3 full-time teachers. They were all reputed in their respective fields and contributed significantly in spreading the idea of basic Economics among students. At present the Department is run by two full-time teachers and two ‘State Aided College Teachers’ (i.e., SACT). Moreover, one more full-time teacher is to be selected by the appropriate authority very soon. We are carrying out our duties and responsibilities here for the betterment and upliftment of the students as well as for the society with humility.
